Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1.5 cups warm water about 110°F
  • 0.25 cup olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil chopped
  • 1 cup shredded cheese such as mozzarella or cheddar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Loaf Pan
  • Wire rack
  • Floured surface
  • Damp cloth
  • Rolling pin
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt. Gradually add this flour mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring continuously until combined.
  3. Step 3: Add olive oil to the mixture and knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Step 4: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size—about 1 hour.
  5. Step 5: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Step 6: In a small bowl, mix together the minced garlic, chopped parsley, chopped basil, black pepper, and shredded cheese.
  7. Step 7: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  8. Step 8: Evenly spread the garlic herb and cheese mixture over the rolled-out dough.
  9. Step 9: Starting from one end, roll the dough tightly into a log shape and place seam side down in a greased loaf pan.
  10. Step 10: Cover the loaf with a cloth and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  11. Step 11: Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Step 12: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.
