- Step 1: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Step 3: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Step 4: Place in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
- Step 5: After rising, punch down dough and knead in garlic, parsley, rosemary, and thyme.
- Step 6: Divide dough into three parts, roll each into a rope, and braid them together on a greased baking sheet.
- Step 7: Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Step 8: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Step 9: Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the loaf.
- Step 10: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Step 11: Let cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
