Ingredients
  

For the Potatoes au Gratin
  • 2 lb russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • Fresh parsley chopped, for garnish

  • Large saucepan
  • Sharp knife or mandoline

Method
 

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Step 3: Stir in heavy cream and whole milk, heating until just about to simmer. Remove from heat.
  4. Step 4: Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, paprika, and onion powder.
  5. Step 5: Grease your baking dish and begin layering half of the sliced potatoes. Pour half of the cream mixture over the first layer, followed by half of the cheeses.
  6. Step 6: Repeat layering with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses.
  7. Step 7: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Step 8: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Step 9: Let cool for a few minutes before garnishing with chopped parsley.

Notes

This dish can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking. It is also freezer-friendly for up to 2 months.
