Ingredients

For the Classic Baked French Toast Casserole
  • 1 loaf French bread cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10-12 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup optional, for drizzling
Optional Toppings
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking Dish
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Covering foil

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  3. Step 3: Add the cubed French bread to the egg mixture and gently fold the bread into the mixture using a spatula. Allow the bread to soak for about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Pour the French toast mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. Step 5: Cover the baking dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight if you want to prepare it in advance.
  6. Step 6: When you're ready to bake, remove the foil and place the dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Step 7: Once baked, allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh berries if desired.

Notes

For best results, use stale or day-old French bread. You can freeze the unbaked casserole for up to 2 months.
