- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Step 2: In a medium pot, bring water to a boil and add the orzo pasta. Cook according to the package instructions until it is al dente. Drain the orzo and set aside.
- Step 3: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until they are caramelized and golden brown.
- Step 4: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked orzo, caramelized onions, vegetable broth, grated Gruyère cheese, heavy cream, black pepper, and thyme. Mix well until all ingredients are fully combined.
- Step 5: Grease a baking dish with a little olive oil. Pour the orzo mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly.
- Step 6: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Step 7: Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
